Review: ORBX NTSU Pago Pago for Prepar3D V4
ORBX is well-known for its high-quality scenery products for flight simulators, and one of their latest releases is NTSU Pago Pago International Airport for Prepar3D V4. This scenery covers the entire island of Tutuila in American Samoa, as well as the nearby islands of Aunu'u and Nu'utele. It also includes a detailed rendition of the airport itself, with custom buildings, ground textures, dynamic lighting, and static aircraft.
I had the opportunity to test this scenery on my PC, which has the following specifications:
Intel Core i7-9700K @ 4.6 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8 GB
32 GB RAM
Windows 10 64-bit
Prepar3D V4.5 with Hotfix 2
ORBX Global Base, Vector, OpenLC North America, and Trees HD
The installation process was straightforward, using the ORBX Central application. The download size was about 1.2 GB, and the scenery took up about 2.5 GB of disk space. The scenery also comes with a control panel that allows you to adjust some options, such as the density of vegetation, buildings, and static aircraft.
The first thing that impressed me about this scenery was the level of detail and realism that ORBX has achieved. The island of Tutuila is beautifully rendered, with accurate coastlines, roads, bridges, landmarks, and vegetation. The textures are crisp and colorful, and the mesh is smooth and detailed. The scenery also features realistic water effects, such as waves, reflections, and coral reefs. The airport itself is also very well done, with accurate layout, signage, markings, and lighting. The buildings are modeled with great attention to detail, and the static aircraft are varied and realistic.
The performance of this scenery was also very good on my system. I was able to maintain a steady frame rate of around 30 FPS on average, with most settings on high or ultra. The scenery did not cause any noticeable stutters or pauses, even when flying low and fast over the island. The only minor issue I encountered was some flickering of the runway lights at night, but this did not affect the overall experience.
The ORBX NTSU Pago Pago scenery is a must-have for anyone who enjoys flying in the Pacific region. It offers a stunning and immersive environment to explore, with a lot of variety and detail. It is compatible with Prepar3D V4 and V5, and it costs $32.95 AUD (approximately $25 USD) on the ORBX website. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new destination to fly to.
To give you a better idea of what this scenery has to offer, I decided to do a short flight from NTSU Pago Pago to NSTU Tafuna, which is a small airport on the western end of the island. The flight distance was about 10 nautical miles, and I used the default Cessna 172 Skyhawk as my aircraft.
I started at NTSU Pago Pago, parked at one of the GA spots near the terminal. The airport was busy with traffic, both in the air and on the ground. I could see some commercial jets, such as Hawaiian Airlines and Samoa Airways, as well as some smaller planes and helicopters. I tuned in to the ATIS frequency and got the weather information. It was a clear and sunny day, with light winds from the east. The temperature was 28ÂC (82ÂF), and the altimeter setting was 29.92 inches of mercury.
I requested clearance for departure from the tower, and got instructions to taxi to runway 05 via taxiway A. I followed the yellow lines and signs, and reached the runway threshold. I did a quick run-up check, and then announced that I was ready for takeoff. The tower cleared me for takeoff, and I applied full throttle. The Cessna accelerated smoothly on the asphalt runway, and lifted off at about 60 knots. I retracted the flaps and climbed to 1500 feet.
As soon as I left the airport area, I was greeted by a stunning view of the island and the ocean. The scenery looked amazing from the air, with realistic shadows and lighting effects. I could see the mountains, valleys, villages, and beaches of Tutuila in great detail. I also noticed some ships and boats in the water, as well as some birds flying around. The scenery felt alive and dynamic.
I turned left and followed the coastline towards the west. I flew over some interesting landmarks, such as the National Park of American Samoa, the Blunts Point Battery, and the Leone Falls. I also enjoyed seeing the contrast between the green vegetation and the blue water. The scenery was very diverse and scenic.
After about 10 minutes of flying, I reached NSTU Tafuna. It was a small airport with a single runway (05/23) and a few buildings. It looked very simple compared to NTSU Pago Pago, but it still had some nice details. I contacted the tower and got clearance to land on runway 05. I reduced my speed and altitude, and extended the flaps. I aligned myself with the runway centerline, and made a smooth touchdown at about 50 knots. I applied brakes and exited the runway via taxiway B.
I parked at one of the GA spots near the terminal building, and shut down the engine. I had completed my short flight around Tutuila island, and I had enjoyed every minute of it. The ORBX NTSU Pago Pago scenery had provided me with a realistic and immersive experience that I will not forget anytime soon. aa16f39245
